Meet the wine supplier - Viu Manent

Hippo Inns are proud to present Viu Manent, a family owned vineyard from the Colchagua Valley in Chile. Try a glass of the fresh and aromatic Reserva Chardonnay or the juicy red berry scented Reserva Merlot, or perhaps a bottle of Secret de Viu Manent Carménère when it joins the wine list in a few weeks time.

Viu Manent is one of Chile’s oldest family owned wine producers. It was founded in 1935 by Miguel Viu Garcia who emigrated to Chile from Catalunya and bottled wines in Santiago, Chile’s capital city. However, he dreamed of making in his own wines and in 1966 he was able to buy the Hacienda San Carlos de Cunaco, the historic vineyard where he had long sourced his wines. In 2015 his grandson Miguel Viu Bottini celebrated the company’s 80th anniversary, a real milestone in the world of Chilean wine.

A revolution is taking place in the Chilean wine industry and Viu Manent is right at the forefront exploring the Colchagua Valley to uncover its unique and varied terroirs. The San Carlos vineyard is in the valley’s winemaking heartland, located to the east of the Andes. Here Viu Manent have one of South America’s oldest vineyards, first planted with vines imported from France in the second half of the 19th Century. In the 1990s they looked east towards the Coastal Range Mountains establishing their La Capilla and El Olivar vineyards in, what was then, a new winemaking zone. The current decade has seen them explore Coastal Colchagua in the search of cooler areas to produce delicate white wines.

For Viu Manent though the revolution is not just about exploring new areas but also about understanding the land, matching varieties to suit it and using working practices to ensure the vineyards are sustainable. As a family business, decisions are always made with the future in mind. Viu Manent are committed to reducing their impact on the environment and just one way they do this is through the use of light-weight bottles. This significantly reduces their greenhouse gas emissions and they are certified by the UK based Carbon Neutral Organisation for their wine distribution.

Operating internationally their wines have been recognised in many major international wine competitions. In 2010 they were named the most awarded Chilean winery in a survey of gold medals and trophies awarded in major international competitions by Vitis magazine.
